Our latest playground improvement project was inspired by a chalk game I play with my girls (Sophia and Isabelle Pfander). We make obstacle courses combining symbols and words from chalk which we enjoy until the rains come.
Hey, what if we were to paint something like this on the playground?
Peter Metzger, Lakeside high school senior and Wedgwood resident, partnered with me to design and paint the Oceans of Fun Obstacle Course. This was Peter Metzger’s, Scout Troop 144, Eagle Scout service project. On September 9th, Peter will receive his Eagle Scout Award. Our community is fortunate to benefit from his talent and hard work!
Many others helped paint the course: Thanks to members of Troop 144, the amazing Metzger Family, the creative Barrow Family, and my own Palmer Pfander family. We also thank Wedgwood Jet City Pizza for donating delicious pizza for our work party.
School and neighborhood children now have an opportunity to yell “I am great” ride the waves on a surf board, skip along the Wedgwood School Aqua Bus, and stand on one foot with a flamingo. (Adults are welcome to try out their skills, too!)
Our design promotes literacy/reading, noticing and identifying colors, large body movement, imaginative play, solo or group play, and positive self esteem. Look for the obstacle course on the Southwest Corner playground by the Kids Time portable. Dolphin Pride welcomes you when you arrive and is with you as you leave. Enjoy! Consider how you can contribute to improving our learning community.
