Wedgwood Math Fair

March 13th, 2008 by Laura Lindhe

What is a Math Fair?

The Math Fair for the Seattle Elementary Schools started as a project co-sponsored by the Nation Science Foundation (via the VIGRE and GK-12 grants), the Department of Mathematics at the University of Washington, and the local store “Math and Stuff”. The goal of this project is to bring mathematics closer to home for the families of the students in the Seattle public schools. Our main motivation is to promote mathematics as a fun activity for all kids.

How Will it Work at Wedgwood this Year?

Tatiana Toro, 4th grade parent and a Professor of Mathematics at UW will run two training sessions for parents and kids. The first one was on Monday and the second one is Friday March 14 both from 3:15 pm to 5 pm. During these sessions parents and kids will have a chance to learn how to play some of the games, which they will be able to teach other members of the community during the Math Fair on March 20th.

These games provide a fun way to learn problem solving skills. Kids and parents will have the opportunity to sample strategy, memory, sequencing, and geometry games.

Please join us for MATH FAIR on Thursday, March 20th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm in the cafeteria. Pizza will be available starting at 5:30 pm and “Math and Stuff” will be there after 6 pm, offering many of the games for sale.

If you have any questions please contact Tatiana Toro, toro at math dot washington dot edu or ttoro64 at gmail dot com.
