Wedgwood and the Washington State Chess Championship

April 23rd, 2008 by Laura Lindhe

The chess club will have its largest team yet, 16 kids, attending the state championship this coming weekend. Although over 1,400 elementary age kids will attend the event, we’re expecting a great showing from our relatively small contingent!

In other news, our top players participated in elite level play the past two weekends. Zhemin Shao represented Washington in an International Match against British Columbia and managed to win one of his two games against their two best Kindergarten players. Roland Feng, Andrew and Nate Osborn participated in the Tournament of Champions (invitation only tournament). Roland took 1st place in 1st grade, Andrew took 2nd place in 2nd grade and Nate took 1st place in 4th grade. Not bad!!

The Chess Team Goes International

Spring is an exciting season for young chess players. With three kids in the top ten for their grade (Zhemin Shao, Roland Feng, and Andrew Osborn) we’re looking forward to another strong performance at the State tournament on April 26th in Redmond. Over a dozen Wedgwood kids are busily preparing for this event. We may also send a small team to the National tournament in May.

We are especially proud of Zhemin. He is the first Wedgwood kid to be selected for an elite international tournament! He will represent Washington State Kindergarteners in the upcoming WA vs. BC playoff in Vancouver, Canada on April 19th. Be sure to cheer him and the rest of the Wedgwood team on to victory!
