Welcome to the Wedgwood Chess Club

Along with having fun while introducing our kids to the game of chess, we have several loftier goals for the chess club.

  • Club membership offers the opportunity to build friendships and learn good sportsmanship.
  • Puzzles develop general problem-solving skills, while encouraging kids to transition from haphazard, to calculating, to pattern-recognition based chess play.
  • Tournaments instill patience and perseverance, since the most prepared and disciplined child usually wins.
  • Finally, chess is unlike other sports because it levels the playing field with adults, allowing the kids to gain a deeper sense of confidence in themselves.

For these reasons, chess is experiencing a resurgence among elementary age children in the U.S. and Seattle is a major hub for this activity (see recent New York Times article). Our club's success relies heavily on parent involvement, through volunteering and by reinforcing the weekly lessons and concepts while at home. This website serves as a valuable resource to these ends.
