Work in Progress

July 18th, 2008
by Brad Mohr

This web site is undergoing some much-needed maintenance this summer. The biggest changes are all behind the scenes, but the look of the site is changing as well. It’s still a work in progress, but feel free to let me know what you think. And if you have a picture you think would look good up in the header, send that along, too.

Will you help save the waters of the Earth?

April 23rd, 2008
by Laura Lindhe

Can you discover the secrets of the Lost City?
Would you like to join the Tribe of the Hand?
What if Bigfoot is real?

These are the questions from which adventures arise.   Take a heroic journey with Terra-Forma Education’s Eco-Quest Summer Day Camp.  Eco-Quest is a five-day quest-based adventure day camp. Youth ages 6-10 become immersed in complex stories, based on myths and legends, which develop around them. Along the way they will meet characters, find and follow clues and work together to complete their journey. All adventures take place within the context of current environmental education issues that challenge the participants to explore and learn about our interconnections with the Earth.   For more information visit www.terra-forma.us or call 206-361-2133.

Wedgwood and the Washington State Chess Championship

April 23rd, 2008
by Laura Lindhe

The chess club will have its largest team yet, 16 kids, attending the state championship this coming weekend. Although over 1,400 elementary age kids will attend the event, we’re expecting a great showing from our relatively small contingent!

In other news, our top players participated in elite level play the past two weekends. Zhemin Shao represented Washington in an International Match against British Columbia and managed to win one of his two games against their two best Kindergarten players. Roland Feng, Andrew and Nate Osborn participated in the Tournament of Champions (invitation only tournament). Roland took 1st place in 1st grade, Andrew took 2nd place in 2nd grade and Nate took 1st place in 4th grade. Not bad!!

The Chess Team Goes International

Spring is an exciting season for young chess players. With three kids in the top ten for their grade (Zhemin Shao, Roland Feng, and Andrew Osborn) we’re looking forward to another strong performance at the State tournament on April 26th in Redmond. Over a dozen Wedgwood kids are busily preparing for this event. We may also send a small team to the National tournament in May.

We are especially proud of Zhemin. He is the first Wedgwood kid to be selected for an elite international tournament! He will represent Washington State Kindergarteners in the upcoming WA vs. BC playoff in Vancouver, Canada on April 19th. Be sure to cheer him and the rest of the Wedgwood team on to victory!

Wedgwood Students Know Geography

April 18th, 2008
by Laura Lindhe

Wedgwood’s 3rd Annual Geography Bee was a lot of fun last Thursday evening. Every student who scored in the top 5 on the written test for their class participated in the bee, and all came prepared. It was obvious the students had worked very hard, with some adults commenting that the students knew more about geography than they did.

Congratulations to the winning teams! The winner for the 1st-3rd-grade bee was room 7, made up of Astra Downer, Flora Peterson, Skylar Presch, Annika Prichard, and Kyle Stevens. The winner of the 4th/5th grade bee was room 8, made up of Karina Cooper, Sophia Dudas, Nolan McCafferty, Nate Osborn, and Eli Sitchin.

Moderator, Chip Dodd, did a fabulous job with just the right balance between humor and intensity. Thanks to volunteers Kathy Sitchin and Katherine Pak for serving as judges, and to Reiko Henry and Logan Presch for popping and serving popcorn during the bee. And many thanks to all the people who helped out before and after with set up and clean up.

On an unfortunate note, the team from room 5, made up of Gabe Briggs, McKenzie Boyle, Nick Jansen, Caroline Malone, and Calvin Oakenfold, was eliminated prematurely. When asked to identify a country in Oceania, they pointed to Australia. Mr. Dodd explained that whether or not Australia is a part of Oceania is controversial in geographic circles, and then he ruled them incorrect. Upon further investigation, we found that several sources do include Australia as part of Oceania. The geography bee committee apologizes to the team and will present them with sweatshirts. For future years, we are looking into ways that will allow a team to challenge their elimination before leaving the stage.

Thank you to all the students, parents, and teachers who got so excited about the bee. We’re looking forward to an even better event next year!

FUN has ended for the 3rd Graders.

April 18th, 2008
by Laura Lindhe

Well, yes and no. The Seattle Audubon society has completed an 8-week program, which began in the fall and ending just last week. The FUN program has our third grade students to explore their schoolyard habitat from birds in the trees to millipedes on the ground. This program could not have happened without the parent volunteers of Brett Llewellyn, Emily Maher, Jessica Compeau, Karen Wang and Lauren Bricker (with a pinch hit from Ruben). Many thanks to all of you! Fun will continue within the classrooms …
